Johann Heinrich T i s c h b e i n  the Elder, b. 03.10.1722 in Haina/Hessen, d. 22.08.1789 in Kassel. Son of the baker Johann Heinrich Tischbein and Susanne Margaretha Hinsing.

After painting apprenticeship in Kassel 1743-1751, studies in France and Italy. 1753 named court painter in Kassel, but that appointment disrupted by many trips and the forced relocation during the French occupation 1756-1763. Connected to Hamburg through various stays there and commissions from there and through his friendship with Klopstock and the sometime presence of his brothers there.
Married first, on 31.10.1756 to Marie Sophie Robert (d. 1759), daughter of a `Kanzleisekretär' (government official), then married again, 1763, to his first wife's younger sister, Anne Marie Pernette Robert. [1]

Maria Elisabeth  d e  B o o r, nee Timmermann was 1780 among the circa 20 students of the Kassel Kunstakademie, where Tischbein the elder, the court architect Simon Louis du Ry (1726-1799), as well as the sculptor Johann August Nahl (1710-1785) were professors and where Tischbein's nephew, Johann Heinrich (1742-1808) taught drawing.
She had known Johann Heinrich Tischbein already in her youth, when he painted a portrait of her bourgois family in 1758 in Hamburg.
